Championing Safe, Inclusive Spaces for Every Young Person 

Across the youth sector, organisations are navigating complex questions about their legal duties and values. The Equality and Human Rights Commission is producing statutory guidance on how to interpret the April 2025 Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of sex in the Equality Act. When this is published, UK Youth will work with other youth sector infrastructure organisations to ensure the sector is well informed and confident to respond. 
 
UK Youth remains steadfast in our commitment to championing kindness, empathy, and respect for all young people – values we know the youth sector shares and that youth workers embody every day. 

We stand in solidarity with trans young people and with the youth workers who support them, and will continue working with partners across the sector to ensure inclusive practice, provide safe and welcoming environments, and promote understanding among all young people. 

To all trans young people: you belong in youth spaces. You deserve opportunities to learn, grow, and connect – just like any other young person. Your identity is valid, and your presence strengthens our communities. 
 
We know that many youth workers are asking what they can do right now. Here are some practical ideas: 

• Reach out to trans and non-binary young people in your communities and services. Let them know they are valued, respected, and supported. 

• Respect the names and pronouns young people use. 

• Conduct or refresh Equity Impact Assessments for your services, involving young people in discussions about how to promote equity. 

• Review your safeguarding and bullying policies to make clear that transphobic bullying and discrimination are unacceptable and cause harm.
