Adventures Away from Home is well underway. Applications closed in September and over 100 outdoor providers across England were successful in securing the fund to run AAfH at their centres. Thank you to the many established charities and non-profits who submitted proposals. This programme, delivered in collaboration with DCMS and fully funded by the UK Government, will reach 30,000 young people and it’s designed to ensure those from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds can access life-changing outdoor learning opportunities for free.

Why is AAfH vital right now: The newly published National Youth Strategy has identified “Action 7: Places to Go” as a priority, explicitly stating a goal for “More time in nature” and “supporting outdoor learning through youth friendly parks, outdoor spaces, play, and residentials” because outdoor experiences are vital for body and mind. AAfH supports this national mission by funding providers to deliver free day visit as well as one- or two-night residential experiences.
These aren’t just trips; they are essential interventions that help young people:
AAfH uses UK Youth’s Experience, Learn, Develop Outdoor Learning Youth Work Framework. An approach to outdoor learning where young people learn through “what they do, what they encounter, and what they discover”. This is a holistic approach, deriving impact by looking at an individual’s “whole self,” capabilities, and outcomes. This framework is rooted in the recognition of the connection between youth work and outdoor learning. By bringing these disciplines together, the model aims to support young people’s development.
Looking ahead to 2026: In the new year, we will commence the community-building phase of the programme. We will share blogs and case studies from the network showcasing best practice in outdoor learning and bringing forth the impact that outdoor learning experiences have on young people’s lives.
