Reflecting on Labour Party Conference: Youth Voices at the Heart of Policy Conversations

UK Youth recently attended the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, with UK Youth staff and our incredible #iwill ambassadors proudly representing the organisation. It was a week full of thoughtful discussions, deep reflection, and meaningful conversations—especially around the themes of community cohesion and intergenerational connection.

As the conference progressed, it was clear that young people were central to the Labour’s vision for the future.

A Spotlight on Youth Work

In his keynote speech, the Prime Minister referenced youth clubs multiple times, acknowledging the transformative role youth work plays—not just in the lives of young people, but across wider communities.

While this recognition is a positive sign, it must translate into genuine policy shifts which we continue to advocate for, particularly ahead of the upcoming National Youth Strategy.

Encouraging Policy Announcements

There were early signs of progress, including:

• Further detail around the Youth Guarantee, aiming to support young people into education and employment
• A new target: two-thirds of young people under 25 to enter university, further education, or a “gold standard” apprenticeship

These are steps in the right direction—but we know much more is needed.

Highlights from the Week

Outdoor Learning and Enrichment Panel

Our Head of Policy and Affairs chaired a panel in partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), focusing on the mental and physical wellbeing benefits of outdoor learning. The panel included DofE Youth Ambassador Haniyah, Phil Brickell, MP for Bolton West, and Ruth Marvel, CEO of the DofE.

#iwill Ambassadors in Action

Our ambassadors Ella-Lucy and Tamar met with Josh Dean MP (Hertford and Stortford), who highlighted how youth work positively shaped his journey into politics. Their conversation touched on impactful programmes like the Young Futures Programme, and how government can work together with the youth sector.

Youth-Led Democracy Panel

In partnership with Shout Out UK and Full Fact, we hosted a powerful youth-led panel on democracy. Our #iwill ambassadors and youth representatives posed direct questions to:

• Jim McMahon, former  Minister of Housing, Communities and Local Government
• John Slinger, MP (Rugby)
• Peter Swallow, MP (Bracknell)
• Jacob Collier, MP (Burton and Uttoxeter)

From Votes at 16 to youth service funding, the discussion was dynamic and solution-focused. In fact, it went so well that a Parliamentary Select Committee is now exploring how to replicate the session in Parliament—a real testament to youth-led advocacy.

Centre Stage with the Mayor’s Fund for London

Our CEO attended a compelling session hosted by The Mayor’s Fund for London, alongside:

• Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business
• Natasha Irons MP, Chair of the APPG for Youth Affairs
• Youth reps Jakaria and Aneesa

The message was clear: we must listen to young people—and act.

We’re now looking forward to attending the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, continuing to ensure that youth voices remain front and centre in national conversations.
