Introduction to First Gear & On Two Wheels

This interactive day will use activities and small group discussion to provide participants with a practical working knowledge of the concept and techniques involved in UK Youth’s First Gear & On Two Wheels programme and how it fits with wider road user education.
Each participant will be required to register with UK Youth if they wish to deliver the First Gear and On Two Wheels Programme to young people, which provides an essential starting point for young motorists.
Course Objectives
By the end of the day participants will have:
- gained an understanding of the UK Youth First Gear programme and explored its potential for use in a variety of education settings;
- understood the process of how to set up and deliver UK Youth’s First Gear programme;
- explored some of the different possibilities for delivery;
- explored the meaning and educational potential of road user education and the opportunities for quality youth work;
- explored the possibilities for accreditation;
- explored the importance of the motor vehicle and mobility in young peoples lives;
- explored possible funding opportunities for road user education;
- increased their knowledge and understanding of techniques to use in their work in managing and delivering road user education;
- had a go at some of the First Gear activities;
- had an opportunity to share their experience with fellow participants and build potential links for the future;
