Working with Boys and Young Men

Working with Boys and Young Men

Training Manual

This training course provides all the information needed for participants to deliver a one-day training course for those who work with young people on the theme of 'working with boys and young men'.

Most youth work programmes are open to young women and young men; however there may sometimes be a need for these groups to have their own individual space. This gives them the opportunity to discuss and consider issues that may be awkward to discuss in a mixed gender setting.

The cost of the course includes a copy of the accompanying training manual which offers various activities such as scenarios, discussion starters, games, small and large group discussions, individual reflection, reading, creating posters and role play.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Be confident in using the training manual to train other key members of staff to deliver the two day programme
• Outline some of the key issues in the lives of young men
• Describe some recent trends and research findings with regards to boys and young men
• Discuss some of the issues and challenges that workers face in working with boys and young men
• List a range of activities, methods etc… that can be used when working with boys and young men, and describe some of these activities in detail
• Give examples of how some of these activities, methods etc… could be used in a programme, aimed at addressing a particular problem or scenario
• Describe some difficult situations that workers might face with boys and young men, and outline some strategies for dealing with these
