All of the Youth Challenges and Youth Achievement Award portfolios need to go through a stage of internal quality assurance - called internal moderation. This is done, or overseen, by the Operating Agency's nominated Agency Moderator.
In order to become an Agency Moderator you must:
- Attend the Youth Challenges and Youth Achievement Awards Introductory Day
- Attend Agency Moderator Training
- Attend two External Moderation Meetings
- Submit at least 2 portfolios that you have moderated at one of those External Moderation Meetings
ASDAN will certificate any agency moderator who completes all the above requirements.
External Moderation
The Youth Achievement Awards are subject to a robust external quality assurance system which means that you can be confident that a portfolio gained in one part of the country has met the same minimum standards as one obtained from another part of the country.
The External Moderation process for the Youth Achievement Awards is managed by ASDAN. ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) is an educational charity that creates opportunities for learners to achieve personal and social development through the achievement of awards and qualifications, thus to enhance their self-esteem, their aspirations and their potential contribution to their community.
With the Youth Achievement Awards we encourage a peer process between workers supporting the Awards through a programme of External Moderation Meetings. At these meetings workers moderate portfolios from other agencies attending the meeting, and complete a structured checklist to ensure that the portfolios have met all the requirements of the Awards. These meetings are a great opportunity to share practice, see how other agencies use the Awards and look subjectively at what makes a portfolio a good one.
UK Youth and ASDAN recognise that it is not always possible to attend an external moderation meeting and therefore we provide the option to have a postal moderation process available.
For more information about the External Moderation Process, please download Section D of the Guidelines to the Youth Achievement Awards here.
Please note that ASDAN is responsible for managing the complete External Moderation process for the Youth Achievement Awards scheme, including all sampling of portfolios, Agency Moderator Training and External Moderation meetings.
Please direct all enquiries about dates and deadlines for upcoming External Moderation Meetings to ASDAN. All booking forms and External Moderation Forms should be sent to ASDAN before the deadline stated on the attached document.

Online candidate registration for Youth Achievement Awards is now available so you can now enter your candidates electronically. Essentially you follow exactly the same procedures as you currently do for submitting candidate names, but instead of filling in a paper form you can now complete a web-based form on the ASDAN website.
To do this you will initially need to go on the ASDAN website and register your e-mail address so that we can send you a unique password which gives you access to the secure area of the website. Once you have been sent your password you will then be able to register candidates online. For more information on the online candidate registration click here.
