UK Youth have developed a learning curriculum that encompasses seven progressive stages of personal development and incorporates ten key personal and social skills. It is these skills that many employers recognise as being the most important attributes when employing staff.
As part of this curriculum UK Youth has developed programmes in both Peer Education and Peer Mentoring which first gained qualification status in 2004. Taking into account the experiences and needs of deliverers and candidates, these programmeshave nowbeen reviewed and rewritten as units that conform to the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).
This new qualification developed by UK Youth is intended to meet the needs of young people involved in this aspect of educational development. These qualifications will provide accredited development opportunities for those who become involved in this important area of the lifelong learning sector.
These new qualifications are intended to provide added creditability to peer education and peer mentoring through recognition of the valuable role it plays in non-formal teaching and learning.
The value of peer education and peer mentoring and its role in the personal development of both those who are involved in delivery and those involved as recipients is increasingly recognised by employers. In addition to developing their own skills, knowledge, understanding and practice, those involved in peer education and peer mentoring make an important contribution to the continuous improvement of learning and have a significant impact on achievement.
