Staff Requirements for First Gear and On Two Wheels Programme

Both programmes usually require a minimum of three staff, one of whom must have an appropriate educational qualification (e.g. in youth and community work or teaching). The following is an ideal list of criteria for the Informal Educator, but it should be remembered that training is provided as part of the First Gear and On Two Wheels Training framework.

  • A basic qualification in teaching, training or youth and community work;
  • An understanding of the issues related to vehicles and young people.

The staffing requirements for each section are as follows:

In the Mind

In general, a youth worker or trainer undertakes this part of the programme. Ideally someone who has:

  • A youth and community qualification;
  • Empathy towards the needs of young people;
  • Knowledge of organisations operating in the field of vehicle transport at a local level;
  • An understanding of young people’s interest in motor vehicle use;
  • Patience and flexibility in approaches to work;
  • Experience of working with young people in groups.

Under the Bonnet/Tank

An experienced and qualified mechanic delivers this part of the programme. In many cases, the riding instructor can take on this role. In all cases, the person must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of basic maintenance procedures;
  • Ability to explain such procedures;
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures;
  • An ability to communicate with young people.

Behind The Wheel/Handlebars

This section of the programme is delivered by an instructor who:

  • Has a Driving Standards Agency approved driving instructor qualification for the First Gear or On Two Wheels programme;
  • Has a DSA Cardington or Level 1 qualification for the On Two Wheels programme;
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures;
  • An ability to communicate with young people.

All staff involved should have:

  • An ability to work in a way that reflects an equal opportunity approach;
  • A commitment to First Gear or On Two Wheels and a willingness to deliver the whole programme;
  • Enthusiasm to participate in the programme.
