The recently published report from New Philanthropy Capital, After the Bell, which details various important out of school activities for children and young people, highlights the work of UK Youth in providing valuable out of hours support to young people.
The independent report seeks to offer “tailored advice on the most effective and rewarding ways to support charities.” It aims to show donors the alternatives to established formal education, particularly in the context of out of school hours services, as a way for young people to learn important life skills that may not be as focused on in a classroom setting.
UK Youth’s alternative curriculum approach based on social and personal skills development is highlighted, with the Youth Achievement Awards gaining particular emphasis. The report goes on to say that this approach to learning can be evidenced at 7KS, an independent school in Lincolnshire which employs the alternative curriculum and the Youth Achievement Award model to engage excluded young people. After the Bell states that “7KS gives UK Youth a shop-window with which to lobby for change.”
UK Youth advocates the importance of greater support for young people and can provide a broad spectrum of non-formal education programmes. Additionally the charity’s residential centre, Avon Tyrrell provides non-formal learning opportunities to young people with activities and programmes aimed at helping young people to build important life skills, resilience and confidence.
