UK Youth's National Members Group receives Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People

Chelsea Reneham accepted the award on behalf on the NMG at UK Youths Annual General Meeting

The National Members Group (NMG) – part of national youth work charity UK Youth – has been chosen to receive the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People for their outstanding contribution and commitment to involving young people in the community.

The National Members Group is a group of young people aged between 15 and 25, elected by their peer group. They actively work to promote youth participation and encourage young people to get involved in their communities.

Drawn from all parts of the UK, each year 22 delegates are elected at their annual conference and at regional and local meetings. NMG have worked on many campaigns on issues such as young people’s rights, lifelong learning, bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, literacy and homelessness.

Being on the NMG gave me the confidence to realise that I could do anything. I felt valued and was encouraged to have an opinion and express it.” – Sam, NMG member

Earlier this year in Westminster, members of UK Youth’s NMG participated on the speaker panel for a UK Youth seminar on youth volunteering held at the House of Commons alongside keynote speaker Ed Milliband MP (Minister for the Third Sector). NMG members have also recently visited No.10 Downing Street and participated in media training at the BBC Westminster studio.

The NMG works in partnership with other organisations supporting young people and sharing similar aims and objectives; they promote active citizenship through media, advocacy and campaigning.

We are very proud of the achievements of the National Members Group and of the commitment, enthusiasm and creativity they bring to involving young people in their local communities and it is fantastic to see this reflected in and recognised by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award.” – John Bateman OBE, Chief Executive, UK Youth

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award was launched nationwide in April 2000 to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by many young people to their schools and communities. The Award is given to young people demonstrating:

  • Involvement in youth participation or volunteering
  • Selfless service to others
  • Showing outstanding qualities in overcoming adverse circumstances
