The programme and its aims

UK Youth received a substantial £750,000 grant from the DCSF, (Department for Children, Schools and Families) for its three year 'Movers and Shapers' Programme.

UK Youth ‘Movers and Shapers’ programme is giving disadvantaged young people aged 13-19, unprecedented support to pursue excellence in the provision of life impacting key services.

The programme is building the capacity of UK Youth and its network to support 95 young people to seek the views of over 1,500 young people, to use these views to develop, pilot and disseminate new models of collaboration with 24 public and private service providers. These include health care, parenting agencies and UK Youth itself.

It aims to provide 75,000 young people with opportunities to achieve Every Child Matters outcomes via 4,000 improved services and 8,000 up-skilled workers across England.

Using IT as a tool for participation

The programme uses IT to communicate with, and betwen, the national UK Youth Voice group, and the four local influence groups; Maidstone Young Families Group (Maidstone, Kent), Connexions NDC (Coventry), Habilitas (Suffolk) and The Phoenix (Bolton)

With IT and social media becoming an everyday part of young people’s lives, it is becoming more and more important to understand how these can be best used as a cost effective tool to support and enable young people’s active participation.

This series of articles aims to give an overview, illustrating the breadth of the ways in which you can use technology, in a safe way, to support participative work with young people.
