The UPS Foundation is partnering with UK Youth to bring their Road Code programme to young people in the UK. The initiative builds on the learning from the Foundation's successful collaboration in the US, with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Road Code promotes road safety among young people through workshops and ‘behind the wheel’ simulations. As part of the pilot phase of Rode Code in the UK, UPS staff have run two workshops at UK Youth’s National Activity Centre at Avon Tyrrell in Hampshire.
Interactive sessions
Young people from Christchurch Activities for Young People and Dorset’s Children’s University came to Avon Tyrrell to gain a better understanding of what it takes to be a safe road user – in the future, when they begin to learn to drive and right now, when they cycle or walk.
The sessions were lively and interactive – in particular, the activities on the simulators proved to be a fantastic learning tool as well as great fun! The feedback showed the popularity and power of the simulators, which offered a ‘driving test’ session, where young people could test their skills and experience some of the hazards of the road at first hand.
Comments from participants on the Avon Tyrrell Road Code Course:
- “I thought the course was very good and I have definitely learnt something new and I will go away with new opinions”
- “The simulators were very good and helped me understand the laws of the road”
