Mental health advice – by young people for young people

With support from Starbucks Youth Action, young people have produced a mental health booklet, designed to challenge and change attitudes.

The booklet is designed by young volunteers working with and leading Mentality, a mental health project in Bristol. It explains some common mental health issues and gives some tips and information for young people to use to look after their emotional wellbeing. The booklet covers:

  • Stress
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Body image
  • Relationships
  • How to look after yourself

Mentality is part of the work of Off the Record, a Bristol-based mental health support agency. Mentality is working to challenge the lack of understanding amongst young people around mental health, and to ensure no young person is judged or treated differently because of a mental health issue. Many of the young people volunteering on the project have experienced mental health issues themselves, so Mentality provides a powerful way of giving them a voice.

Support from Youth Action

Youth Action is a partnership between Starbucks and UK Youth, supporting young people to improve their communities in eight cities across the UK. Volunteers from Mentality applied for funding from Youth Action and were awarded £2700 to support the publication and launch of the booklet.

Starbucks Youth Action offers young people grants of up to £2000, plus Starbucks staff volunteer time, for eight cities across the UK. Year 2 funding is now available, with applications open until 9am 5th March 2012. The cities are: Greater London, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester.
