Paradigm YP is a group of like minded young people passionate about championing young people’s issues. The group has recently launched a campaign to promote the benefits of first aid being taught in schools which is being run as an O2 Think Bigger project in association with UK Youth.
It is estimated that in the Britain alone 150,000 people die each year as a result of not receiving basic first aid and yet fewer than 1 in 10 people have been trained in first aid (St John Ambulance statistics).
“We believe that first aid is an essential life saving skill that every young person has the right to have and as such should become a compulsory part of primary and secondary education.” states Campaign Coordinator, Chris Whitwood. “By teaching first aid in schools we hope to create a generation of first aiders who are equipped with practical life saving skills and as a result hundreds, if not thousands, of lives can be saved.”
Paradigm YP has already attracted a good deal of high profile support. In November the group travelled down to Westminster to meet Baroness Royall, Leader of the Labour Party in the House of Lords, to discuss the campaign. She believes that:
“To teach first aid as a PSHE module would be great for the country.”
Paradigm YP is made up of a number of young people from across the UK and Northern Ireland and whilst they are campaigning on a national level they also want to work locally to persuade as many schools as possible to deliver first aid to pupils.
