UK Youth – Helping Government respond to the riots

Trust for London is funding a group of youth charities, including UK Youth, to look into the issues that contributed to the recent riots.

This will produce a sector-wide response to the events and a suggested programme of activity that could help avoid a recurrence of the problems.  This work followed on from a collaborative effort to arrange a 'Not in our Name' event at Westminster Central Hall in the week the violence took place. It successfully gave young people a platform to have their say about the riots and highlighted the positive contributions that the vast majority of young people are making in their communities.

Daniel Snell from Arrival Education set up the collaboration that also included London Youth, V inspired, Leap, Confronting Communities, YouthNet, Changemakers, NCVYS, Magnificent Generation, My Generation and The Challenge.  The event was preceded by a visit to Downing Street for a smaller group that included Claire Dever and Josh Cope from UK Youth. They were among thirty people who got the chance to discuss the riots with Prime Minster David Cameron. “It’s really important that UK Youth and other similar organisations are advising government as they consider a response. We want to ensure that those making policy understand the valuable contribution that quality youth work can make in dealing with these kinds of situations.” Charlotte Hill, UK Youth Chief Executive. UK Youth is also working closely with NCVYS on a more detailed response from the sector to the Department of Education and has already held meeting with Minister Tim Loughton MP.
