Macclesfield YAF Launch new Training BrochureYouth Federation Training Brochure 2010

Macclesfield Youth Achievement Foundation has launched a Training Brochure for 2010 / 2011. This is an extremely useful guide for those organisations working with young people in Cheshire, Halton, Warrington and Wirral.

Youth Federation, a registered charity, has been providing support to voluntary youth groups for over 50 years. Our extensive knowledge of supporting community groups is bespoke to those working with young people and we have a wealth of experienced staff that cover direct delivery, volunteering, capacity building and non-formal education. We aim to offer a package of support to youth groups in Cheshire, Halton, Warrington and Wirral, whose primary focus is upon creating better opportunities for a wide range of young people.

About Macclesfield Youth Achievement Foundation (MYAF)

Run by the Cheshire based Youth Federation, MYAF is a thriving centre of learning excellence created to give students who might otherwise be NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) a fresh start, a positive learning environment and specialist-trained support.

MYAF offer students an informal, personalised programme five days a week, giving them a standard of education that is nationally recognised, accredited and measurable, delivered via the Youth Achievement Award framework. Vocational activities include but are not limited to bricklaying, plumbing, cooking, environmental studies, gardening and boxing. Students can do professional work placements in local businesses. From this September on, students will have the opportunity to do their GCSEs.

MYAF is here to help young people between 13 to 19, and, with the right learning programme, put them back on the road to success. Students have access to their own mentor, a community volunteer chosen because they enjoy their company and can act as a positive role model.

Each and every student is treated as an individual who deserves the best that we can do for them. The warm, friendly, supportive atmosphere creates a real MYAF family, in which all are recognised as unique human beings with their own gifts and abilities.

Macclesfield case study

Sarah joined Macclesfield Yaf because of her low attendance and difficulties to fit in at school. When she joined she had no aspirations and considered herself a ‘naughty kid’. Coming from a difficult family background she often felt overwhelmed with managing everyday life.

At first Sarah did not socialise with the rest of the group and was very reserved. She spent her breaks in the staff room talking with staff. She appeared very mature but had no confidence in herself and her own ability. Over time she realised that staff would help her without expecting anything in return. A year on, Sarah has gained much confidence and is now one of MYAF’s ambassadors. She has delivered speeches and presentations to promote MYAF and to help gain work placements for young people.

Sarah has her own community mentor and sees the benefits of having someone to talk to. She has also entered a local photography competition and is doing placements in a nursery and housing association. She is now talking about become a child physiologist and helping children to get over major issues and difficulties they may have experienced in their lives.
